Hello Chess club parents & players,

Welcome to the new year!!  As students return to class, I want to let you know what we've been working on for you in order to continue with the chess club, but in a safe way.  While many players may prefer to learn and play face-to-face, that just isn't possible right now, but luckily we can still do this online and have a lot of fun at the same time!

The basics:
  • Lessons will take place on Wednesdays, from 6:30-8pm as usual.  First lesson would be Wed Oct 7.
  • Players will need to sign on to Zoom, using a link that will be provided
  • We will start with the usual announcements & questions.  After that, players  will be put into "breakout room" groups, which will have been decided ahead of time based on players abilities.  Each breakout room will have a coach, who will go over a lesson for 15 or 20 minutes.
    • The more advanced players will be coached by IAC coaches Chris and Ryan.
    • Beginners will be coached by me and Ryan O'Leary.
  • After the lesson, players will then go to lichess.org,  sign into the MSCC club, and play "Arena" style games with other players from the club, much as we would in class.  "Arena" style just means that a player is paired with someone relatively close in rating.  After the game is over, the players are then paired with someone new, depending on rating and who's available.  The Arena style games would end around 8, but a player would always have the choice to leave early or stay later.
The process:
  • Sign up on the website as usual - at muskegochess.com   (available now)
  • Annual fee of $50 remains the same, and includes chesskid.com gold membership for those who want it.
    • Fee can be mailed or paid through PayPal (details TBD, I will send out information when it's set up).
  • Each player must have a lichess.org account and a device to join the Zoom lesson and lichess.org.  A link will be sent for the player to join the MSCC club, and also the IAC club if he/she chooses.
  • Players will be provided account information for chesskid.com, if they are new to it.  For current players (2019/2020 season), the log in information will remain the same.
Trial Run

In order to help the club and IAC get everything organized, we are looking for 5-10 volunteers to have a practice lesson over Zoom on Wed Sept 9th.  We will have a shortened lesson to test the breakout rooms, and then everyone can go to lichess.org to play, so anyone volunteering needs to have a lichess account by then.  If you are interested in volunteering, please email me as soon as possible.  Limited to the first 10.

As always, let me know if you have any questions.  We're looking forward to getting started and will have other announcements about tournaments soon!

Thanks
Coach Dan

Chess

MSCC year end changes

Hi All,

Sad to end the year this way, but because of Covid19 concerns, you've seen that all remaining tournaments are cancelled.  In addition, because school is also cancelled for at least the next few weeks, we'll also cancel the last class - April 1st.

Safety first!  For us, and for the more susceptible in our communities.

On a positive note, the online chesskid tournament is set for next Wed the 18th!  Two sections - one for green, white, blue wrist bands and one for red, purple, black.  There is also a shorter practice tournament set for Tuesday.  Watch for email details.

If you have any questions or concerns please reach out to me.
Take care
Coach Dan

March 11 - Pizza Party

Hi All,
Even though there's a couple more chess classes left, we're having our "End of the Year" Pizza Party on Wed, March 11 at 6:15 pm. Since this is a fundraiser, we ask that everyone only starts out w/2 slices (to make sure there's enough pizza for everyone).  The cost is $5/person & is open to not only the chess players but their families as well.
If you'd like to being anything, please let me know. We already have a veggie platter, fruit platter, cheese & sausage platter, & brownies covered.
 Bring your appetite!

Elmwood

Elmwood Scholastic Open

Randy at Elmwood hosted & ran another great tournament this weekend.  The MSCC brought just 6 players to the nearby tournament that had over 125 players - largely in the K3 & K6 unrated sections.  We had a great time!

K3 unrated

  • Calvin was our lone player in K3 and it was his first tournament!  He did a great job and got a couple of draws before he had to leave early.
K6 unrated

  • Reid and Kai played very well in just their 3rd tournaments.  Reid led the way with 4/6 wins, finishing in 12th place and earning his red wrist band!  Kai was right behind w/ 3 wins.
K12 Open section
  • We had 3 players but no teams.  Luke led the way with 3/5 points and a 3rd place finish!  Josh and Arnold were close behind with 2.5 and 2 points.

Feb 22,23

MSCC Divide & Conquer weekend!

This weekend proved how busy the chess world can be this time of year!  Our club had players attend St. Dominic's in Brookfield, the high school SMCA finale in Kewaskum, and the WSCF Discovery World tournament in Milwaukee.  In total, 15 players attended and played some really nice matches!

St Dominics

K8 unrated -  Kai played in just his second tournament and again took 3/5 wins and a 4th place trophy!

K8 rated -  Andy had a great day and went undefeated, winning all 4 matches!  In the process his rating jumped to 900 so he now has his purple wristband - way to go Andy!  And if that wasn't enough, his wins actually gave him a 3rd place team trophy -  I think that's a first!

SMCA finale in Kewaskum

These were the season ending matches for the 9 schools in the division.  We had a tough time getting enough players to these high school tournaments to play consistently, but we saw some good long games (these are G60) on Saturday.  Matthew led the way with 2/2 wins.  Also playing was Will, Aaron, Steven, Arnold & Josh.

Discovery World

K3 -  Lexi was our loan player in this section and had a great day, taking 4/5 wins!  Somehow with even that many wins, because of the way tie breakers played out, she just missed getting a trophy.

K5 - Reid played in just his 2nd tournament and made a ton of progress, while Lucas led the way with 3/5 wins.

K12 - We had a strong team in this division - Bella lead the way with 3.5/5 wins!  Josh and Luke were close behind, and Anthony, who played up in division this weekend, had 3/5.  The team took home a 3rd place trophy!

Next up - New Berlin Elmwood this Saturday the 29th!

Asa Clark

Asa Clark Pirate Open Results

The MSCC brought just seven players to Asa Clark in Pewaukee yesterday.  It was another IAC well-run tournament and we had a lot of fun!

The Results:

K8 non rated

  • Kai was our lone player in this section and it was his first tournament!  He did a fantastic job, winning 3 out of 5 matches in the largest section of this event!

K8 rated
  • Luke led the way with a superb undefeated day, winning 5 out of 5 and taking first place!  Close behind was Anthony with 4 wins, taking 4th place! Rishi and Josh also played well with 3 wins each.  If we could have combined our schools into one group (looking into this for future events), we would have taken first place as a team.
K12 rated
  • This was a much smaller section but still provided strong competition.  The team of Steven and Arnold played some tough matches and took 2nd place!

Next up for our club -  High School team in Kewaskum on the 22nd and WSCF Discovery World on the 23rd.

Brookfield Spartan

Brookfield East Spartan Open

The MSCC brought 9 players to Brookfield East Saturday for a well run tournament by the IAC.  Well over 100 players participated in 3 sections.

K5 non rated

  • Noah played in only his second tournament and Ben played in his first.  Both did a great job finishing with 2.5 and 3 points respectively, and Ben took 11th place!  They proved there is a way to squeeze some chess in around basketball and swimming schedules!

K8 rated

  • This was a competitive and large section.  Andy led the way with 4 out of 5 points and a 6th place finish!  Close behind was Luke, Rishi and Anthony, all with 3 points.
  • Impressively, the team of Andy and Luke took the 3rd place team trophy!

K12 rated

  • This was a smaller section but still quite competitive.  Will led the way with 3 of 4 points and a 2nd place finish!  Both Steven and Bella had some good wins as well!

As usual, all of our players demonstrated very good sportsmanship and made the club proud!

Next up - Asa Clark in Pewaukee Feb 8th, run by the IAC

Hope to see you there!

Homestead

Homestead & Snow

We only had two players & parents brave the snow and attend the charity tournament at Homestead in Mequon this past Saturday.

K12 rated
  • Josh & Andy did a great job in a very tough section.  Josh led the way with 3 out of 5 wins and a 10th place finish, while Andy was right behind with 2 wins.  Each of them faced some tough opponents (1300+ rated) and played very well!

Our next events will be IAC-run tournaments in Brookfield on Feb 1 and in Pewaukee on Feb 8 -  hope to see you there!

McKinley

WSCF McKinley - Big Bling !

The MSCC brought 8 players to McKinley Elementary school in Tosa on Saturday - hosted by our old coach Mr. Seghers, and run by the WSCF.  It was a very well run tournament (and fast!) and our players did a fantastic job and brought home a lot of trophies!

K3
  • Lexi was our loan player in K3 and did a great job with 3.5/5 points and a 4th place finish!
K6
  • Anthony and Rishi led the way with 3rd and 4th place finishes - each taking 4/5 points!  Lucas was close behind with 3 wins and Reid got a win as well in his first tournament!  The team took home the 2nd place team trophy!
K12
  • Josh led the way with a 2nd place finish, but Luke was right behind in 3rd place and Steven in 4th place -  all three took 4/5 wins!  The three of them also took home the 1st place team trophy!
Thank you to the parents who braved the icy conditions!

Next up -  Homestead on the 18th.
